Where to Open a Brewery in 2026: A Data-Driven Analysis
Forget gut feeling. We scored every US ZIP code on five factors — income, demographics, education, competition, and accessibility — to identify the 315 best markets for a new brewery. The top opportunity: Ann Arbor with a Brewery Opportunity Score of 76.2/100.
The craft beer industry closed 434 breweries in 2025. But 268 new ones opened — and the ones that succeed share a pattern. They launch in markets with high household income, young educated populations, low existing competition, and good foot traffic. Our Brewery Opportunity Score (BOS) quantifies exactly this.

What the Successful Openings Have in Common
Analyzing the BOS data reveals clear patterns in markets that support new breweries. Median household income above $70,000 — residents need disposable income for $8-12 pints. A 25-44 age cohort above 20% — the core craft beer demographic. Bachelor's degree rate above 30% — education correlates strongly with craft beer preference. And critically, a current BDI below 10 — enough room for a new entrant without brutal competition.
The taproom model dominates successful recent openings. Low overhead, direct-to-consumer, no distribution headaches. If you're entering a market from our top 25, a 2,000-3,000 sq ft taproom with a nano or small-batch system is the lowest-risk path.
Methodology
BOS (Brewery Opportunity Score, 0-100) = weighted composite of: Income Score (25%), Demographics Score (25%), Education Score (20%), Competition Score (inverse BDI, 20%), Accessibility Score (10%). Population minimum 10,000 for "High Opportunity" designation. Data: US Census ACS 2023, Open Brewery DB, WalkScore.com. Analysis by BrewDensity.com.
